Welcome to
Dawn of Thyme

Dawn of Thyme is a small, 22 acre farmette in SE Wisconsin. We are trying to make a difference in how our food is raised in todays "Fast lane" lifestyle. Dawn of Thyme is run by Dawn Luce, a biology major with an emphasis in the Environment. We believe that farming can be done with an ecological perspective, and are trying to work with our natural world, not against it. We hope to make a difference if even in a very small way.  We grow and produce our animals and crops by the "Stewardship Principle".  In Genesis, it speaks of God giving the earth and all in it to mankind to till and to keep.  In the world today, there is a whole lot of tilling, but the way it is going, there will be little left for our grandchildren's children.  We must find a way to work with nature allowing the soil to continue producing for us and prevent the destruction of the land we have been given.

Some of the things we raise here at Dawn of Thyme include the following :

Free Range Eggs -

Our birds are naturally raised, with the ability to run, spread their wings and forage without use of hormones, antibiotics, or other chemicals.   We don't have disease problems, because our birds are raised on fresh air and lush green pasture. We had our 17 acre field planted in Alfalfa, to help build our soil and allow the birds to graze happily. We currently have a flock of 21 birds, but will expand our flock throughout this summer.  We will hatch out several batches of baby chicks.  So please stop by to see the baby fluffballs.

Fresh Picked Heirloom Vegetables -

We have a 1/4 acre garden of heirloom vegetables, grown naturally without chemicals. We  only use natural controls to keep down the pests in the garden. We mulch between the rows to prevent weed seeds from germinating. We practice Crop Rotation to rebuild the soil and reduce pests and disease between crops. This also helps to rebuild soil structure. We have a very heavy Blue clay, from the old Lake Michigan Lake Bottom, and the only "Cure" to get the soil to produce and produce well is to add fluff to the soil. We are returning all the remnant plant material to the soil after harvest, utilizing green manures, and using leaves from the area.  If you have grass clipping, branches, or leaves, but no place to compost let me know, we are always looking for more to add to the garden.

Fresh Fruits -

Our small 1/2 acre fruit orchard is also treated naturally. We use only non-toxic, environmentally safe dormant oil and Surround, a natural Mineral based product from Garden's Alive to prevent Apple maggot, Coddling Worms, and scab, as well as traps to catch and kill the moths and flies.. Our chickens are put under the trees at the end of the growing season to scratch and uncover the larva and cocoons of overwintering pests as well as to clean up any fallen fruit.
